This page lists some questions that no one’s asked yet, but perhaps someone will one day. If that happens (or if I think of more stuff to put here), this page will be updated.
GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is Undertale?
Undertale is a globally famous RPG (role-playing game) released by Toby Fox in 2015. The game is inspired by many older games, mainly ones from Japan, such as the Mother/Earthbound series, Cave Story, Shin Megami Tensei, Touhou Project etc. The game is available in English and Japanese.
What is UndertaleHR?
UndertaleHR (UTHR, Undertale in Croatian) is the Croatian translation of the globally famous RPG (role-playing game) published by Toby Fox in 2015 and inspired by older games of mainly Japanese descent. The game is not officially available in the Croatian language, but the UndertaleHR mod (modification) adds a Croatian translation along with the English and Japanese versions of the game.
Is UTHR the official translation?
It’s not. The game is officially playable only in English or Japanese. The English version is the original one, while the Japanese translation was overseen by Toby Fox. The Croatian translation was made without Fox’s involvement, so it is not official. Still, Toby Fox said he likes seeing unofficial translations, so this shouldn’t be a problem to him 🙂
Why is UndertaleHR?
Since its release in 2015, Undertale has been highly acclaimed by audiences worldwide, but it never gained much popularity in Croatia. As a fan of the game and, as luck would have it, a Croat, I decided to translate the game to Croatian so Croats could experience it too – whether they don’t know English or if they’d like to meet the characters and story in a language that feels closer to them.
Can I play UTHR if I’m not a Croat?
Of course! You shouldn’t have any trouble understanding the Croatian translation if you come from another Balkan country and speak a similar language.
Anyone who understands Croatian is welcome to play this mod!
Can I play UTHR if I don’t understand Croatian?
… Okay, sure, why not! After all, the fact that an English version of this website exists might be some sort of incentive for that?? Undertale in Croatian could serve as a fun way of studying the Croatian language – perhaps by playing this mod you will also learn something new.
Can I play UTHR if I don’t understand Croatian and don’t want to learn it?
Well, umm, yeah…?
Whatever your motives may be, if you want to play UTHR,
feel free to do so!
Can I play UTHR if I don’t want to play UTHR?
… (let’s move on)
TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
When will UTHR be available?
The planned release date of the translation is September 15, 2025 at midnight CEST. Why that date? The original game was published on September 15, 2015 – once the Croatian translation comes out, Undertale will officially have reached its tenth birthday!
Is UTHR free?
Yes! You can download and install the Croatian mod free of charge! However, in order to play it, you will first need the original version of the game, which is paid. Undertale can be bought on various platforms (Steam, HumbleBundle, GOG, Microsoft).
Which platforms can I play UTHR on?
The only platform the mod has been tested and confirmed to work on is Windows.
[NEW] How do I download UTHR?
Detailed instructions for downloading and installing (as well as uninstalling) the mod are now available on the download page.
[NEW] TRANSLATION QUESTIONS
Why is the translation the way that it is and not something different?
Undertale is full of puns, creative names, words and sentences with multiple meanings, which all makes it quite hard to translate. My vision was to translate the game as if it were made for a Croatian audience – that’s why names are adapted to the language, some jokes are changed so they would make sense, and some references to Croatian pop-culture are added as well. At the same time, I wanted to remain faithful to the intent and spirit of the original and create a translation that both new and existing fans of the game could enjoy!
I like the translation and I want to commend it!
Thank you very much 🙂 Every comment is welcome, feel free to send your thoughts using the contact form!
I hate the translation and I want to offend it!
Critiques are welcome as well! The translation has been revised many times so the current plan is not to alter it substantially, but if you have any suggestions for improvement, feel free to send them in the form. Even if they don’t end up accepted, you will definitely receive a reply!
What should I do if I notice a bug (typo, game crashing, untranslated text etc.)?
Please do report anything you think might be an error, the form has a dedicated category specifically for bug reports, it’s entirely possible that some mistakes are still in the mod. Describe the problem in detail (e.g. if the game crashed, describe at which point the crash happened, which line of dialogue appeared right before the crash etc.) so it could be solved as fast as possible.
OTHER QUESTIONS
[NEW] Can I share pictures/videos of the mod?
Feel free to record and share the translation on social media, that would be a great honor! However, I would like to ask you not to present the mod as your work, it would be ideal if you could add a link to this website somewhere with the picture/video so people would know where the translation comes from.
If there is UndertaleHR, will there be DeltaruneHR?
It’s very likely! However, you will need to be patient – the current plan is to wait until Deltarune is fully released, and only then can we talk about the Croatian version. Various translation decisions will depend on how Deltarune‘s story ends up playing out.
[NEW] If you won’t do it, can I translate Deltarune? Or maybe Undertale?
I will!! I want to!!!! Of course, no one’s prohibiting you from translating any of the games yourself! In fact, seeing different visions of Croatian Undertale or Deltarune would be quite nice. I’d just like to ask you not to name your translations/mods UndertaleHR or DeltaruneHR because players might get confused and mistakenly attribute them to me.
Which question should I ask to end the FAQ?
Ummm… maybe we could stop here for now.
